Jewelry Care

Care depends on the metal, the stone and any treatment the stone has received. The guidance below is general. If a product page gives specific care instructions, follow those first.

Everyday habits

  • Put jewelry on last, after perfume, lotion and hair products.
  • Take it off for sport, swimming, cleaning, gardening and sleep.
  • Store pieces separately so that harder stones do not scratch softer metals and stones.

Gold

Clean with warm water, a drop of mild washing-up liquid and a very soft brush. Rinse and dry with a lint-free cloth. White gold is often plated with rhodium, which can wear over time and be renewed by a jeweller.

Sterling silver

Silver tarnishes naturally. Wipe it with a silver polishing cloth; for plated or stone-set silver, avoid chemical dips, which can damage plating and some stones. Store silver in a closed pouch or box to slow tarnishing.

Diamonds and lab-grown diamonds

Both are very hard but not indestructible: a sharp knock can chip them. Grease dulls their brilliance, so clean them regularly with warm soapy water and a soft brush, paying attention to the back of the stone. Avoid harsh chemicals, and ask before using ultrasonic cleaning if the stone has been treated or the setting is delicate.

Moissanite

Moissanite is very hard and tolerates regular cleaning with warm soapy water and a soft brush. The setting and the metal around the stone set the limits of what is safe, so treat the whole piece gently.

Coloured gemstones

Hardness and treatments vary widely. Sapphires are hard, but many gemstones are softer or treated. Clean with lukewarm soapy water and a soft cloth, and avoid heat, steam and ultrasonic cleaners unless you know the stone tolerates them.

Pearls

Pearls are soft and sensitive to chemicals. Wipe them with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth after wearing. Never soak them or use cleaners. Store them flat, away from harder pieces.

Storage

A lined box with separate compartments, or individual soft pouches, protects each piece. Keep silver away from humidity. Lay chains flat or hang them to avoid knots.

When to see a jeweller

If a stone moves, a prong looks raised, or a clasp feels loose, stop wearing the piece and have it checked. Small repairs made early prevent losses later.

Frequently asked questions

Can I clean all my jewelry the same way?

No. Gentle warm water and mild soap suit many pieces, but pearls, porous stones and treated stones need specific care. When in doubt, ask us before cleaning.

Can I use an ultrasonic cleaner?

Not for everything. Ultrasonic cleaning can damage pearls, porous stones, fracture-filled or otherwise treated stones, and can loosen stones in some settings.

Should I remove jewelry to swim?

Yes. Chlorine and salt water can harm metals and some stones, and cold water can make rings slip off.
