What a gem report is
A gem report, often called a certificate, is a document issued by a gemmological laboratory describing one specific stone. For diamonds it typically records the 4Cs (cut, colour, clarity and carat weight), measurements and, where relevant, whether the diamond is natural or laboratory-grown and any detected treatment.
What a report does not do
- It is not a valuation or an insurance appraisal.
- It describes the stone, not the setting, the metal or the craftsmanship of the piece.
- It only relates to the stone it was issued for, which is why report numbers matter.
Independent laboratories
Several independent laboratories grade diamonds and gemstones, among them the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the International Gemological Institute (IGI) and HRD Antwerp. Laboratories use their own procedures and terminology, so a report should be read together with the laboratory's own explanations.
How DORVETTI shows certificate information
When a piece comes with an independent report, its laboratory and report number are shown on the product page, and the report accompanies the piece. When a piece has no report, we do not describe it as certified. Supplier statements alone are never presented as verified facts.
Checking a report
Many laboratories allow you to check a report number online, and some diamonds carry a laser inscription on the girdle matching the report number. If you have questions about a report, write to us.

Frequently asked questions
Is every DORVETTI stone certified?
No. Whether a stone comes with an independent report depends on the individual piece. If it does, the laboratory and report number appear on the product page.
Is a certificate a guarantee of value?
No. A report describes the characteristics of a stone as observed by the laboratory. It is not a valuation or an appraisal.
Can a lab-grown diamond have a report?
Yes. Several independent laboratories issue reports for laboratory-grown diamonds, and those reports identify the stone as laboratory-grown.
